If what you are missing is the auto-detection of spelling errors, you just need to change your preferences. You may need to do this in three places:the part of the system where the student profiles are created (the "students" window), in the part where you write the IEPs (the "iep" window), and in the part where you write goals (the "goals" window). To change your preferences, go to the "edit" menu, choose "preferences", and choose "document". There is a menu in the box that should show "spelling" as one of the choices, and there you can select to have it spell-check as you type, and to either beep with wrong spellings or flash the menu bar with wrong spellings.
In choosing a deictionary, the Iowa IEP system's default is to go back to the Claris or FileMaker dictionary you most recently were using. If you have already had the IEP system (or some other Claris or FileMaker application) installed on your computer, and have not changed operating systems or or versions of the IEP, the IEP system may automatically go to those previously installed user and main dictionaries. If your dictionary was working, but then stopped working, perhaps your main dictionary was moved or deleted.
The first thing you need to know is where the main and/or user dictionaries are located on your computer. The dictionaries in the Iowa IEP system, as installed, are probably located inside your "Iowa IEP Folder", either out in the "Iowa IEP folder" itself, or in one of the subfolders, which may be called "FileMaker Extensions", "System", or "Runtime Files", depending on which version you are using. You can do a search of your hard drive: the name of the main dictionary is "usenglsh.mpr", and the name of the user dictionary is "user.upr". (There is no "i" in "usenglsh".) But you will need to be able to locate it in order to tell the IEP system which main or user dictionary you want it to use.
The next step is to go under the "edit" menu in the top menu bar of the Iowa IEP application and choose "spelling". A sub-menu there is "select dictionaries". In that window, make sure the kind of dictionary you're selecting is "main dictionary", or "user dictionary", depending on which one you need to set up. There is a browse window in which you can locate and select the dictionary, now that you know its location. If you are setting up both, you may need to go back to the "edit" menu again to locate and select the second dictionary.
It's possible that you will need to re-select the main and/or user dictionary ("user.upr") in the three places listed above: students, iep, and goals {(the "students" window, the "iep" window, and the "goals" window).
