    Iowa's FileMaker Electronic IEP
Tips & Tricks (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q I've downloaded the stuffed or zipped files. What do I do now?
(Also known as "HELP! All I've got is gobbledygook!")
A

The EIEP program is a "runtime," a system of databases that work together and which have their own application, called "Iowa IEP," that runs the databases.

It's intended to be downloaded and used on your computer's hard drive, not over the Internet. Depending on the AEA for which you work or in which your school district is located, you will download the EIEP from a different location. It is important that you use the version of the EIEP that was customized for your AEA, so that you will have all the IEP forms that are specific to your AEA. Check the list here.

It's set up so that you download the appropriate version of the program for your operating system (Macintosh or Windows) to your computer from the www.iowa-iep.org home page. You will also want to download the "Visual Step-by-Step" guide for the EIEP (more on that below). The EIEP arrives as a compressed document (stuffed or zipped), and you will need to de-compress it (unstuff it or unzip it) before you can use it. If you're using a Macintosh, you can unstuff it with something like Stuffit Expander. If you're using Windows, you can unzip it with something like WinZip. There are links to these applications on the www.iowa-iep.org home page. Your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer, for example) may be set up to automatically decompress the files.

If you click on the link to the download, and your browser window starts to show gobbledygook, stop the download and go back to the download page. Hold your mouse over the download link and hold down the mouse button until a menu pops up. Choose to "save" the file. This should start the download of the file as a document rather than as a webpage.

Once it's unstuffed or unzipped, you will have a folder with 8 database documents and an application called "Iowa IEP". There will probably also be some extraneous files in the folder, such as a dictionary. There will be many extraneous files if you are using Windows, and whether you will be able to see them or not depends on whether you have your computer's preferences set to see invisible files.

Nothing else needs to be done to "install" from the web version. The application doesn't have to be installed. Just launch it from the "Iowa IEP" application in the "Iowa IEP Folder." If you're on Windows, it will not show up in your "programs" list. You just need to know which folder you put it in when you unzipped it, and locate it there to launch it. If you wish, you can put a shortcut or alias to the "Iowa IEP" file on your desktop or somewhere else where it's easy for you to find.

There are instructions on using the program in the "Visual Step-by-Step" guide, which can also be downloaded from the www.iowa-iep.org home page. It is a PDF file, and does not need to be unstuffed or unzipped. You do, however, need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader or something like it installed on your computer to read the guide. You can download Acrobat Reader, from the Adobe website, if you find you don't have an application in which you can view the guide.
